Tucker was a challenge – pugs, like boxers can make a more human impression on us than other dogs because their noses are shorter (like ours are). This often causes confusion when rendering the proportions of the face. I checked and double checked my measurements, or so I thought, and checked in with some fellow dog artists at the Canine Art Guild to get their input. Their observations were that Tucker’s skull appeared to be too small, which I discovered when I measured yet again, was due to the fact that in trying not to put his eyes too close together I had overcompensated and had placed them a whole eye-width too far apart. He now looks much happier than he did when I started!
This painting not only really underscored the notion of “try try again” but also has strengthened my resolve to master the pug! Stay tuned for more pug paintings soon!
